Summary:

There is a growing evidence that oxidized low density lipoproteins (oxLDL) are necessary, if not indispensable, in the development of atherosclerotic lesions. Numerous studies deal with the importance of oxLDL assessment in different groups of patients with clinical manifestation of atherosclerosis, such as acute myocardial infarction (AMI), unstable angina pectoris (UAP), stable angina pectoris (SAP) etc. However, the role of oxLDL in the clinical area has not yet been established. Other major questions which arise are how oxLDL interact with scavenger receptors and how they enter into the circulation. The aim of the review is to summarize some new knowledge in this area and to show the main difficulties in the field of immunochemical determination of oxLDL, which is mainly used for oxLDL measurement.

Key words: oxidized LDL, oxLDL, scavenger receptor, ELISA, monoclonal antibody, acute coronary syndrome, oxidized phospholipids.
