Here we briefly review the new approach to reference materials(RM). According to the new approach reference materials create a „family“ which assures traceability, validation and verification of measurement procedures, proficiency testing of laboratories and also calibration of measurements. Stability and homogeneity are dominant properties of RM. Very important is that RM now also covers material for qualitative tests. Lot of positive influences namely in IVD and accreditation can by provided by this new concept. Key significance of the new approach is the fact that manufacturers’ requirements on the control materials and requirements on the own calibrators must be the same.
