Summary:
A series of 3049 cases of paraproteinaemias has been analysed during 35 years. Immunoelectrophoresis was
used for a characterization of monoclonal immunoglobulins in a series of 2474 paraproteins.Within the last five
years, 575 paraproteins have been detected using immunofixation electrophoresis. Both series of paraproteins
were compared and significantly higher frequency of double paraproteinaemias in the series of 575 paraproteins,
5.9%versus 1.8%, was confirmed. The immunofixation reveals that multiple paraproteinaemias are more frequent
that has been assumed. This article, some problems of electrophoresis and immunofixation electrophoresis for
detection of monoclonal immunoglobulins are also discussed.
