Summary:
In addition to Helicobacter pylori in the human stomach another spiral microorganism – Helicobacter heil-
mannii – may be present. Its presence is usually associated with chronic gastritis with a lower activity than
gastritis in Helicobacter pylori. Intestinal metaplasia and glandular atrophy are less frequent, while the
concurrent presence of MALT lymphoma was observed more frequently. It is identified on histological exami-
nation after staining with silver (Warthin-Starry method), the urease test can be also positive, so far cultivati-
on was not successful. The endoscopic finding of ulcers and erosions is less frequent than in Helicobacter
pylori. Transmission from animals is assumed – cats, dogs, pigs. The authors describe the case of a patient
with Helicobacter heilmannii positive gastritis.
