The authors present some statistical figures from the Institute of Health Information and Statistics which pertain to gastroenterology: hospital admissions in 1997, work incapacity in 1997, activities of health institutions in selected disciplines in 1995 to 1997, physicians and pharmacists 1997. For comparison the authors prepared their own statistics of hospitalized gastroenterological patients from three medical departments in a catchment area with a population of some 200 000 (1995). They prepared also statistics of out-patients treated in five gastroenterological surgeries in 1995 and 1998.
