Summary: The authors present a survey of patients who underwent periradiculotherapy. Their experience is
based on the cohort of 230 patients having been applied 366 interventions altogether at the
Department of Radiology of the Brno Faculty Hospital (Bohunice workplace). The main purpose of
the interventions is to offer another alternative treatment of backache to the patients. It has become
obvious that the method may be useful in the treatment of acute radicular pain provided indication
criteria are strictly observed and the intervention is precisely performed. The most persuasive
results were reached in patients with monoradicular defect, when the intervertebral disc is
protruded. The intervention is not as a substitution for surgical treatment of disc hernia, but should
provide a non-operative procedure by means of percutaneous intervention. This method is also
useful in patients with postoperation fibrosis. Although the results in this group are not persuasive
as far as the percentage of cured patients is concerned, the treatment appears to be useful for
immediate relief of pain and decreasing doses of orally administered non-steroid antirheumatic
drugs.
