Summary:
In the review article the authors describe the biological effects of different types of energy used in
examinations by magnetic resonance (MR), their interactions with possible implanted objects and
ensuing contraindications of MR examination. Absolute contraindications include an implanted
pacemaker, vascular clips made from ferromagnetic or unknown material, magnetically or electronically
controlled implants, cochlear implants, metal wires ending in the heart and foreign metal
bodies in the eye. The most important relative contraindications ofMR examination is claustrophobia,
foreign metal objects, the first trimester of pregnancy, patients unable to lie still approximately
for 30 mins., patients up to six weeks after implantation of stents, cavafilters etc.
