The detection of atherosclerotic alterations in the carotid vessels is useful as a strong guide in the uncovering of systemic atherosclerosis. Patients presenting with risk factors of ischemic heart disease have a higher risk of coronary heart attacks, this allows us to start early treatment. The diagnosis and treatment of significant stenoses of either the common or internal carotid vessels is an important component in the prevention of cerebral stroke. In the article are discussed the clinical outcome of patients with detected atherosclerosis of the carotid vessels, diagnosis, and possible treatment.
