Summary:
This paper describes 2-year experience with the treatment of migraine attacks by sumatriptan (IMIG-
RAN GLAXO 100 mg tablets) orally at our outpatient headache clinic in a group of 47 patients suffering
from migraine with or without aura. There were 41 women (87.2 %) and 6 men (12.8 %), average age
38.7±12.7 years. 392 first doses were administered of which 303 (77.3 %) were effective and 89 (22.7 %)
without effect up to 2 hours after administration. Recurrence headache (RH) at least in some attacks
was experienced by 11 patients (23.4 %). From the total amount of 303 effective administrations RH
developed in 40 attacks (12.5 %). A second tablet administered because of RH was effective in 87 %. From
the total amount of 45 second tablets administered because of inefficacy of the first dose 20 second
tablets (44 %) were effective. The usual adverse events were observed including chest symptoms.
Remarkable was a repeated mono- or hemiparesis occurring in a 28-old woman suffering exclusively
from migraine without aura within 1–2 hours after each of six separate administrations of sumatriptan
lasting 1–1.5 hours which is according to our knowledge unique and may be interesting from the
pathophysiological point of view.
