Differential Diagnostic Relevance of the Blood-CSF Barrier Function and Oligoclonal IgG Synthesis in Cerebrospinal Fluid in Multiple Sclerosis

Neurologická klinika, Fakultní nemocnice, Brno-Bohunice

Summary:

The neuroimmunological laboratory profile is typical for many inflammatory and autoimmune diseases of the nervous system. This profile is important as a differential diagnostic tool. We investigated a group of 30 patients (n = 30) with multiple sclerosis according to Poser diagnostic criteria. The main parameters included albumin quotient, reflecting the status of blood-CSF barrier, intrathecal IgG synthesis by isoelectric focusing with immunoblot and immunoenzymatic staining. The results were compared with parameters of various other neurological diseases and have an important clinical relevance in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

Key words: multiple sclerosis, blood-CSF barrier, intrathecal IgG synthesis, isoelectric focusing.
