Summary: The article presents a study on the reliability of magnetic resonance (MR) of the pelvis in the
diagnosis of uterine tumours. The technique of MR examinations of the pelvis is described as well
as a group of 26 ill women. The group comprised 13 patients with carcinoma of the cervical portio
uteri, 3 women with endometrial carcinoma, 2 women with pyometra of obscure origin and 8 women
with a solitary leiomyoma or uterus myomatosus. They describe three findings which were not in
agreement (2 falsely negative and 1 falsely positive) and compare the diagnostic reliability of the
group with data in the world literature. The relatively great reliability is the reason for recommendation of MR examination of the pelvis when possible, in particular in advanced tumours of the
cervix and endometrium. The findings of microscopic invasion of the portio uteri and carcinoma in
situ are not suitable for MR examination.
