Summary: Paragangliomas are rare neuroectodermal tumors arising from both sympathetic and parasympathetic
paraganglias Chemodectoma of the carotic sinus and the glomus jugulare tumor represent ninety per
cent of these tumors. The authors present a case of a 30 years old man with a nonfunctional paraganglioma
of the filum terminale at the L2-L3 level. The tumor was radically removed from the laminotomy
and a complete remission of the preoperative symptoms was noted. No signs of recurrence or residual
tumor were found at the control MRI six months later. Clinical symptomatology, radiological, histological
and imunohistochemical features of paragangliomas in this location are discussed. The radical
resection is the therapeutic method of choice that shows excellent results.
