Summary:

During the last five years the authors examined a total of 75 patients with the clinical diagnosis of dissecting aneurysm of the aorta. The diagnosis was confirmed in 46 cases and 30 patients were subsequently operated. To assess the correct diagnosis by means of imaging methods the authors used the following pattern: 1. Transoesophageal echocardiography, 2. Aortal angiography, 3. CT with i.v. administration of a contrast substance by means of a pressure syringe, 4. MRI. It was not necessary in all instances to make all the mentioned examinations. In urgent situations and when the finding was clear, the patients were operated only on the basis of echocardiography.

Key words: dissecting aneurysm of the aorta - cardiovascular surgery - transoesophageal echocar- diography - aortal angiography - computer tomography - magnetic resonance imaging
