Summary:

Objective: Evaluation of livin and survivin measurement in sera and urine in individuals with bladder cancer. Apoptosis inhibitors survivin and livin play a critical part in cell cycle progression of cancer. Design: Prospective study. Setting: Department of Laboratory Medicine, Hospital Šternberk; Urology Clinic, Faculty Hospital Olomouc. Material and Methods: We tested 64 patients with verified documentation cancer or bladder cancer in anamnesis and 32 patients with benign urological diseases. Cystoscopy and blood and urine measurement of survivin and livin concentration were performed in all of probands (R&D, USA, ELISA). Results: Urine survivin and livin concentrations were not detecable in both groups even if detection limit of survivin and livin was reduced to 100 ng/l for survivin and 30 ng/l for livin. Serum surviviun and livin: Livin was not detectable in the serum in all patients. Only two individuals had measurable serum survivin values but they had other diagnosis than bladder cancer. Conclusion: Survivin and livin concentration measurement in serum and urine (ELISA) are not able to get diagnosis in patients with bladder cancer.

Key words: survivin, livin, apoptosis, bladder cancer, cystoscopy.
